Abstract

This 5,000 word essay describes the highlights of the Marshall Court of the early nineteenth century. It discusses the Court’s major rulings, their political and social context, and their impact. It also describes the political backlash generated by certain Marshall Court rulings, the Court’s subsequent retreat under pressure, and the legacy of the Marshall Court.
