Death in Queens

Julia Belian, University of Missouri-Kansas City

Abstract

This essay examines the role played by the Queens County Surrogate’s Court in the widely renowned judicial corruption scandals of New York in the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s. By telling the dramatic story of one man – Queens County political boss John Theofel – the essay offers readers a new perspective on the complexity of that judicial corruption.
